I find it interesting that the response to mass murders without an obvious ideological viewpoint is to place limits on certain civil rights (such as gun ownership) which are generally condemned by those on the "right" while supported by those on the "left". At the same time, in response to ideological terrorism, which the Boston marathon bombing seems to fit, the government response is to curtail other civil rights (surveillance, due process, etc.) which are generally supported by those on the "right" while opposed by those on the "left".
